What is Kyo-yuzen?
Kyo-yuzen(Yuzen-dyeing) is said to have originated in the late 17th century, when Miyazaki Yuzenzai, a fan painter in Gion, Kyoto, applied various previously established pattern-dyeing techniques and devised a new pattern-dyeing technique with free pattern expression and rich color expression.
There are two typical Kyo-yuzen techniques: "Tegaki Yuzen," in which all processes are done by hand, and "Kata Yuzen," which is finished using stencils created in the Meiji era.
Both require a high level of skill.

【Tegaki yuzen】Produced by Kimurasenshow Co., Ltd.
Tegaki yuzen is one of the types of yuzen dyeing (the other being stencil dyeing) and refers to the drawing of patterns by hand using various brushes.
Through the establishment during the Edo period of techniques using itomenori paste, it became possible to create dyed patterns without the colours next to each other mixing.
The dyeing process that creates sharp colours that stand out is characteristic of tegaki yuzen.

*gold paint One of the techniques of Kyo-yuzen.
This is a technique for bonding gold or silver foil, gold powder, etc. to dyed fabric. This process makes yuzen dyeing more colorful and expressive.

【Kyo-nui (Embroidery in Kyoto) 】Produced by Fujisawa Embroidery Co., Ltd. Kyo-nui (Embroidery in Kyoto) is done with silk, gold, and silver threads dyed in tens of thousands of colors and using about 20 different techniques. By using embroidery threads in different ways, patterns can be given luster and volume. We embroider with ingenuity to bring out the beauty of the colors.

【Sugaki yuzen (drawing technique) 】Produced by Fujiri Craft Co., Ltd. Sugaki yuzen (drawing technique) is a technique of painting directly on fabric as if it were a painting. Like a painter, it requires skill to combine colors beautifully and to depict objects realistically. The most important thing when choosing a pattern is to choose something beautiful and exciting. For example, a peacock feather or a rainbow. Kimonos, like a campus, allow for free pictorial expression.
